      Saturday, December 7th, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

      Presenters

      John Lewis

      Workshop Description:

The discussion around the subject of diversity in the American Sign Language Interpreting field, particularly as it pertains to ethnic and racial diversity, has faced seemingly insurmountable challenges and has been slow to produce much in the way of tangible results. This is particularly true with regards to recognizing that the US Deaf community is multi-racial as well a multi-cultural, addressing issues of Cultural Competence of interpreters working in non-white communities, and acknowledging that people of color are under-represented in the interpreting field. The discussion of these issues is often co-opted by competing agendas, resulting in cosmetic remedies that do not offer sustainable, results-oriented initiatives. The presenter will review historical challenges to meaningful dialogue and explore strategies for real cross-cultural collaborations that go beyond lip-service to the concept of Cultural Diversity.

      Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

      • Understand the demography by ethnic breakdown in the Sign Language field.

      Workshop Title

Cultural Competence: Beyond the Rhetoric of Cultural Diversity

      Date/Time:

      Sunday, December 8th, 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

      Presenters

      • Understand and identify historical and structural impediments that have contributed to lack of diversity in the field and underrepresentation of people of color in the field.
      • Understand and make linkages between the issues of diversity and cultural competence.
      • Identify interpreting situations in which ethnic and racial cultural knowledge and cultural competence are required.
      • Evaluate their own areas of cultural competence or lack thereof in multicultural interpreting situations.

      Train's Gone, Sorry!

Interpreting Idioms in the Educational Environment

      Date/ Time:

      Sunday, December 8th, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

      Presenter:

      Richard Rose

      Workshop Description:

TRAIN GONE, SORRY is what commonly comes to mind when the topic of ASL idioms comes up. This workshop will explore the greater richness of jargon/idioms in ASL, including those interpreters might have learned but are now considered antiquated, and those that have recently entered the ASL lexicon. By exploring the context around when these phrases are used by the Deaf Community, participants will be better equipped to know how to accurately and appropriately incorporate them into their interpretation, which is critical as often times they serve as the only language model for Deaf/HoH students in a mainstream setting.

      Learning Objectives:

      • Participants will review common ASL jargon/idioms.

      • Participants will discuss how to appropriately incorporate common ASL jargon in their interpretation based on factors such as context and cultural relevance.

      • Participants will also explore appropriate English interpretations for these phrases.

      Target Audience:

Interpreters working in the K12 Classroom Setting

      Workshop Title:

      Language Attitudes

      Date/Time:

      Sunday, December 8, 4:15 PM - 5:45 PM

      Presenter:

      Su Isakson

      Workshop Description:

Language attitude may simply be defined as ones feeling towards their own and others’ language variety use; however, these attitudes are far from simple. A result of our own ideology, belief and knowledge, language attitudes often go undetected and yet are expressed through our emotion, cognition and behavior. Through individual and small group work, workshop participants will come to understand the process of language standardization, conduct a self-assessment of their own language attitude, as well as that of the Deaf community. Through small group work participants will examine the impact of language attitudes on the interpreting process using Dean and Pollard’s Demand-Control Schema (DC-S). Participants will leave with an understanding of how these language attitudes may present themselves in the interpreting process and thus how interpreters may potentially impact language standardization.

      Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

      1. Understand language attitudes

      2. Identify our own beliefs about our own language use

      3. Identify our beliefs about the deaf community’s language use

      4. Understand language standardization

      5. Understand the role of interpreters and how they may play a role in language standardization

      6. Understand the relationship between our language attitudes and the process of interpreting
