WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

As the pool of Deaf professionals is rapidly growing and rising, the demand for qualified interpreters to match has never been greater. This workshop will provide tools and strategies on how to effectively partner with Deaf professionals when the stakes are high. Participants will learn how to develop tools for building an effective Deaf professional- interpreter team, identify strategies to effectively voice for Deaf presenters (in a range of scenarios), and understand the five stages of the hierarchy of interpreting needs. 

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Hearing and Deaf interpreters (ranging from novice to experienced), students, educators and Deaf professionals. 

None to some/little prior content knowledge is required to participate in this workshop.

PRESENTER BIO:

Roberta H Mather is a Deaf Professional who has 20+ years of experience of working with sign language interpreters in the workplace. Her portfolio includes communications strategy, public speaking, marketing, product development, web design, and logistics coordination.  Mather graduated from RIT with a degree in Professional Technical Communications and minors in Marketing and Information Technology. She completed the Graduate School’s Executive Leadership Program in 2013, serving as a keynote speaker at her graduation. Today, she is in the first cohort of U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Washington DC Leadership Development Program. Earlier in the summer, she delivered a presentation at the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)’s Biennial Conference at Hartford, Connecticut entitled: “Captivate: How to Deliver a Dynamic Presentation to a Hearing Audience.”
